Plan the extension before you need it
Know your lodging extension rate, flight-change rules and available support before treatment. A schedule change is much easier when those options are already mapped.
Let the clinician drive the medical decision, not the ticket.
Check your authorized stay
Migración Colombia currently describes short-stay permission and a qualifying extension process for eligible visitors. An extension is not automatic and the rules depend on your status.
Check the official expiry date and apply before it lapses if an extension becomes necessary.
Update the home-side plan
Tell the clinician, employer or family waiting at home if the care plan changes. If home follow-up appointments were already booked, move them rather than simply disappearing.
Continuity starts before you board the return flight.
Immigration and medicine are two separate clocks
A clinician can recommend staying longer, but that does not itself change your authorized immigration stay. Migración Colombia currently states that eligible visa-exempt visitors with a valid PIP can apply for a PTP extension, with total stay capped at 180 calendar days in the same calendar year.
Rules, fees and processing can change, so check your own entry status and the current official instructions before the existing permission expires.
Do not move lodging unless you have to
If your accommodation can extend, staying put is often easier than moving while recovering. Ask about the extension rate and availability before treatment. If the property is usually fully booked, identify a backup nearby with equivalent accessibility.
The same principle applies to transport and companions: know the fallback before the original plan breaks.
Before you lock the itinerary
- Confirm the medical plan and the date assumptions in writing.
- Know who to contact for routine questions and who to contact urgently.
- Keep essential records and medication accessible offline.
- Budget enough flexibility for the trip to change.
- Do not use a travel deadline as personal medical clearance.
Questions worth answering
- When does my authorized stay expire?
- Can my lodging extend?
- What makes the provider delay travel?
- What are my airline change options?
